A big part of learning to play any instrument is knowing where to find the notes and how to play them. The Year 2 students have learned the names of the open strings (ie no fingers needed in frets).
The students have also been shown how to play the notes of the C scale. These are played on the 1st (A), second (E) and third (C) strings of the ukulele, and the children are required to squeeze in the first, second or third fret of that string to make the note. Fretting is challenging in that it can be quite painful for the children until their fingertips toughen up and get used to playing. You can support them at home by giving them lots of encouragement, admiring the lines in their fingertips and commenting on how tough they are when they persevere. Below you will find a chart of the scale which shows the Letter name of the note, it's position on the musical staff, and it's position on the ukulele.
